10 Novels that Feature Writers - Bookcast Newsletter

It's National Novel Writing Month!

Hey there Reader,

It's November and for many writers that means it's time to try to crank out 50,000 words on a project for National Novel Writing Month (NANOWRIMO for the cool kids). So remember to support / encourage your favorite author as they tackle the challenge.

Since we're thinking about writers, this months recommendation list is 10 novels that feature writers as a main character. I've got everything from romance to horror and from brand new to classics.

  • Funny Story - Emily Henry: "I want to know myself, to test my edges and see where I stop and the rest of the world begins."
  • The Paradise Problem - Christina Lauren: “Is that why, in the end, I chose art? Because it’s forgiving? My brain wasn’t wired for medicine, fine, but was I drawn to art because the bounds are loose and subjective?”
  • Misery - Stephen King: "A little talent is a nice thing to have if you want to be a writer, but the only real requirement is the ability to remember the story of every scar."
  • The Plot - Jean Hanff Korelitz: “Either it’s a good plot or it isn’t. And if it’s not a good plot, the best writing isn’t going to help. And if it is, the worst writing isn’t going to hurt it.”
  • Breakfast at Tiffany's - Truman Capote: “Good luck and believe me, dearest Doc - it's better to look at the sky than live there. Such an empty place; so vague. Just a country where the thunder goes and things disappear.”
  • Wonder Boys - Michael Chabon: “The problem, if anything, was precisely the opposite. I had too much to write..."
  • Everyone In My Family has Killed Someone - Benjamin Stevenson: “If a killer is ever revealed and your ‘percentage read’ isn’t at least in the high eighties, they cannot be the real killer; there is simply too much of the book still to be read.”
  • Mexican Gothic - Silvia Moreno-Garcia: “The walls speak to me. They tell me secrets. Don’t listen to them, press your hands against your ears, Noemí. There are ghosts. They’re real. You’ll see them eventually.”
  • The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald: “I’ve been drunk for about a week now, and I thought it might sober me up to sit in a library.”
  • The Perfect Couple - Erin Hildebrand: “It’s a journey or it’s a battle—you pick what you want to call it—but someday soon, we are going to triumph. We are all going to call ourselves survivors.”
